Judo Information

  1. What is judo?
    Judo (meaning "gentle way") is a modern Japanese sport created by Professor Jigoro Kano. It has been an Olympic sport since its debut in the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympic games and has since been a popular and regular part of the games.

    Judo was developed by Professor Jigoro Kano from jiu jitsu and wrestling as a complete teaching method. Kano's idea was that you could develop people's mind, body and spirit by having physical challenges presented in a safe way. So he collected techniques from jiu jitsu and wrestling that fit two principles that are the key to judo:

    Mutual welfare and benefit - respecting one another; performing safe techniques where both partners can learn and progress.

    Maximum efficiency, minimal effort - techniques that do not require extraodinary strength but can still be used to defeat an opponent.

  2. What do you teach?

    We teach Kodokan judo. This includes holds that control your opponent on the ground, breakfalls so that you can be thrown safely by your partner, and throws that are ways of taking your partner from standing to the ground. For people 14 years old and up we also teach joint locks on the elbow and strangles. These last two are not taught until the student is considered to be able to apply these safely.

  3. Why should I do judo?

    Judo is a sport for all. It is a great way to improve your physical and mental health, as well as meeting new people and making life-long friends in our tight judo community.
    With a positive attitude and lots of determination, your physical strengh, endurance, flexibility, dynamic coordination, balance, and reflexes will noticeably improve in just weeks of training.
    We have noticed that our students, especially the younger ones, also often show signs of other types of development, such as confidence, self esteem, respect, work ethic, leadership, and discipline.

  4. What do I wear to the first class?

    If you have a judo uniform you'd always wear that, otherwise a sweatshirt and sweatpants are best when just starting to see if judo is for you. Just make sure that what you wear has no metal parts like zippers or clips since these can be painful to you and your partner when you are rolling around on a mat. Please take off any jewellry (metal or non-metal) too.
